Due to overwhelming interest and need, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene is now offering free nutrition workshops conducted by a Registered Dietitian for day care and preschool staff who work with 3-5 year olds in New York City.

Why does my staff need these workshops?

This professional development initiative is provided to help day cares and preschools comply with Article 47, the recent amendment to the New York City Health Code, which requires that: any food served or brought into the day care center be wholesome, of good quality, appropriate in portion size, provide variety, and be in accordance with approved nutritional guidelines. In addition the food allergy workshop will help ensure that you provide a safe environment for children with food allergies, nourishing them for optimal growth and development and meet requirements for menu substitutions.


Attendees will also receive a 3 hour completion certificate valid to apply to workshop hours required for assistant teachers in Article 47


About the workshops

STARTING EARLY: HEALTHY AND SAFE NUTRITION IN EARLY CHILDCARE

Designed to ensure classroom and food service staff understand nutritional needs of preschoolers, comply with nutrition requirements, and promote healthy eating behavior in both children and staff alike.

OUTLINE:

- Implications of Pediatric Obesity Epidemic in NYC
-Understanding Nutrition Needs of Young Children
-Fostering Lifelong Health Eating Behaviors in our Children and Staff
-Classroom Lesson Plans for 3-5 year olds
-Classroom and food service staff will understand nutritional needs of preschoolers
-Organization will comply with mandated nutrition requirements

BENEFITS:

-Each participant receives a certificate of completion, which is worth 2.5 hours of required workshop for assistant teachers as stated in Article 47.
-Curriculum material for the classroom provided
-Participants learn invaluable nutrition information for their personal and professional lives.


NUTRITION IN EARLY CHILDCARE:

OBJECTIVES:

-Describe the nutritional needs of infants and how they are different from older children and adults
-Recognize developmental milestones which indicate that infants are ready to eat and/or advance eating patterns
-List the safest first foods and when it is appropriate for introduction
-Understand the concept of self-regulation of feeding
-Identify foods NOT appropriate for infants and toddlers
-Manage picky eating
-Plot growth patterns for infants and toddlers and recognize abnormalities
-"Babyfood” Recipe to make with parents onsite!


FOOD ALLERGIES IN CHILDCARE:
FEEDING AND PROTECTING OUR CHILDREN


OBJECTIVES:

-Current trends and perceptions in food allergies
-Difference between a food allergy and intolerance
-Understand the various health problems associated with food allergies
-Recognize the symptoms of allergic responses in children including the verbal and non-verbal cues of an allergic response.
-Understand what to do to prevent and manage an allergic reaction.
-Identify the eight most common foods which account for 90% of food allergies
-Read the Nutrition Facts Label for the eight most common allergens
-Avoid cross-contamination during food preparation and food service
-Resources: recipe modifications, menu-planning, and substitutions for food-allergic children
-Required documentation from parents and medical providers

BENEFITS

-Intake forms and emergency action plans provided to assess and prevent allergic reactions in the school environment.
-Ensure your site is meeting CACFP, Nat'l School Lunch Program requirements for meal reimbursement.

1. How Long?


The trainings are each 3 hours
Participants have 1 hour for lunch (the can pack a lunch and eat in the training room or go out)

2. Who can attend?


Space permitting, any or all of your staff (including kitchen staff) may attend the training.

ROOM NUMBERS WILL VARY-YOU WILL GET CONFIRMATION EMAIL APPROXIMATELY ONE WEEK PRIOR.

You will need ID and have to pass through a security check to enter the building so please allow a few minutes extra.

Do not send other persons aside from the registrants-only the names on the list will be permitted in the building. If you want to send a replacement you must email me within 72 hours of the workshop (ie Friday for the Wednesday workhsops)

TRAININGS START ON TIME-YOU WILL NOT BE ADMITTED MORE THAN 15 MINUTES LATE

8:30-11:30 AM First Training (varies)

11:30-12:30 Lunch (on your own)

12:30-3:30 PM Second Training (varies)
