About
the workshops
For the SECOND time in 2011,
the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene
is now offering FREE nutrition workshops conducted by a Registered
Dietitian for summer campers in New York City.
There are three different age appropriate workshops available
for campers.
All are interactive and fun!
The age brackets are as follows (details on workshops to come...)
K-3
4-7
8-12
OBJECTIVES:
NYC childhood
obesity has reached epidemic proportions. Getting children
to start thinking about health and nutrition and being physically
active at an early age will help reverse this trend.
FAQS
How much
does it cost?
This service is provided by the NYCDOHMH and
is FREE to your organization. We only require that you provide
any materials needed and fill out a satisfaction survey after
the event.
What is
the workshop about?
The nutrition education activity is
currently in development. You will receive details about the
topic and materials (low cost, some may already be on hand
at your camp) you will need when you receive your confirmation.
Last year we focused on sugary drinks and learned how many
spoons of sugar are in many different drinks. The children
then made a poster with bags of sugar to display at the camp.
2011 workshop will be similarly interactive, fun, and age
appropriate.
How Long?
The activity itself will take 30-45 minutes depending on the
group size. Please ALLOW ONE HOUR in the schedule to allow
for set up and wrap up. The workshops must start on time or
they may have to be cut short so the presenter can stay on
the day's schedule.
Who can attend?
All campers may attend, but each of three workshops is geared
toward a specific age-group (k-3, 4-7, 8-12) so it may not
be appropriate for all campers.
When?
Workshops will be on Mondays,
Wednesdays, or Thursdays.
You will be notified by 6/17/11 with the date and time of
your workshop. Due to the large number of camps you will not
be able to request a specific date or time. However, you may
TRY to request a time and date when using the form (there
is a comments area) but we cannot guarantee that we can accomodate
the request.
When you recieve your date and time you will confirm within
48 hours via email. If the date and time are not good for
your site, you may be put on a waiting list to reschedule,
but understand that this may not be possible.
Where?
The dietitian will come to YOUR site
to deliver the workshop, however it is your responsibility
to have any handouts or materials that the presenter will
need. You will recieve that information when your get your
time and date. The materials are free or very low cost, and
again, the workshop is free from the NYCDOHMH.
